MThe military says 10,000 Russian soldiers have returned to their bases after their maneuvers near the border with Ukraine. The Interfax news agency reported on Saturday, citing the military that a drill in which the cooperation of combat units, combat units and motorized units had been rehearsed had come to an end.
Military training took place in several areas near Ukraine. According to Interfax, these include the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014, as well as the southern Russian regions of Rostov and Kuban.
The sending of tens of thousands of Russian troops to the border with Ukraine has raised concerns in the West and the Ukrainian government that Russia is planning an attack on its neighbor. The government in Moscow has repeatedly denied this.
Instead, it demands security assurances from the West that the East should not be further expanded, including NATO’s commitment. Ukraine, in turn, wants to join the Western military alliance.
The Russian military has recently sent an estimated 60,000 to 90,000 troops to the Ukrainian border. U.S. intelligence documents suggest that number could rise to 175,000.
