As of: 12/27/2021 4:26 am

Due to corona infection, more and more pilots are getting sick. Over the holidays alone, more than 7,000 flights around the world were canceled. China and the United States have been hard hit.

So far, more than 7,000 flights around the world have been canceled or canceled in the run-up to Christmas. According to data from the website Flightaware.com, more than 2,000 flights were canceled worldwide on Sunday alone, with nearly 1,200 of them departing for their destination or in the United States. And there were more than 4,000 delays.

According to airlines, many flights are canceled because many employees are infected with the corona virus or are in isolation. In the United States, severe weather warnings also thwarted travelers’ plans.

According to the website, there were about 2,400 cancellations and 11,000 delays on Friday. On Saturday, more than 2,800 flights were canceled and more than 8,500 delays were recorded. The failures affected Lufthansa, Delta, United Airlines, JetBlue and Alaska Airlines.

China’s airlines have been hit hard

Most cancellations were made by Chinese airlines: China canceled 1,000 flights on East Fridays and Saturdays, which accounted for more than a fifth of the flight schedule. Air China has also suspended 20 percent of its scheduled departures during this period.

The mutated variant of the corona virus is already responsible for three-quarters of new infections in the United States. There were new peaks in the number of corona during the holidays in many places: most recently, at least 220,943 new infections were reported in a single day. American airline Delta canceled at least 300 flights on Saturday and about 100 on Sunday – after about 170 were canceled on Friday. After all, the airline did not see the possibility of delivering flights – including the diversion and transfer of aircraft and personnel, Delta said.

Christmas time is the main travel time of the year: the American Automobile Association estimates that more than 109 million people are scheduled to travel in the United States from December 23 to January 2 alone. This is 34 percent more than the previous year, and the epidemic forced large numbers of people to celebrate Christmas in small groups. The Transportation Corporation says most trips for the Christmas season this year were booked before the Omigron variant appeared.

Meanwhile, the U.S. National Weather Service reported several hurricanes that exacerbated travel chaos: meteorologists issued storm warnings for much of the west when temperatures were unusually high in the eastern U.S. states. Experts have warned of heavy snowfall in the mountains.
