Call it the star-power of the blue genie, Will Smith or Aladdin’s wishes being granted, but Disney’s magical recreation of the classic collects a whopping $270M at the box office.
Aladdin 2019 – Disney’s remake of its 1992 animated film – was thought to be a regular at the box office, like any other remake. Instead the Disney live-action bowled over audiences with its timeless magic, a proof of which is the $270M it collected over the weekend worldwide.
Despite not having a star-laden cast, Aladdin made it to the top, on the Memorial Day holiday weekend. It showed its victory in recreating Disney’s magic, however, the studio isn’t always this lucky. Last year this time, it tested its luck with the release of “Solo: A Star Wars Story”, which crashed at the box office, with an unexpectedly substandard opening. However, with Aladdin 2019, Disney has rebound to its previous standards and the same is being expected from its July release of Lion King.
Before the weekend, the musical made around $86.1 million domestically, and was seen as making $105 million by the weekend, which was on par with the expectations of the analysts. For a movie, whose remake cost around $183 million, the box office outcome is beyond expectations. Especially keeping in mind the additional $121 million that the studio earned through overseas collection on Sunday.
The movie’s performance at the box office was also seen as a surprise following average reviews given by some of the top review sites for films like, Rotten Tomatoes.
Disney Aladdin, besides having Smith (as Genie), features Canadian actor Mena Massoud (as Aladdin), and Naomi Scott (as Jasmine) who is now being seen as an emerging ‘fashion maven’ – all thanks to her dazzling red carpet looks. Scott will soon be seen again on the silver screen in the reboot of Charlie’s Angels, alongside Kristen Stewart of the famed Twilight series, and Ella Balinska.
