Alexander Volkanovsky scores unanimous victory with a dominant performance against Max Holloway

LAS VEGAS – Max Holloway polluted the rest of the field with featherweight, but Alexander Volkanovsky rounded Holloway.

Volkanovsky demonstrated the gigantic chasm at the top of the UFC’s best and deepest division by winning all five rounds against the former champion in the best performance of his career on Saturday in the co-main event of the UFC 276 At the T-Mobile Arena.

Volkanovsky defeated Holloway, who described himself as the best boxer in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Volkanovsky was almost perfect in boxing and did not really have to beat the gas at all in the fight.

He was pretty much in second gear, showing off Holloway with punches, right hands and control of the fight from start to finish.

Holloway has now defeated all three of them, having won at UFC 245 in 2019 and UFC 251 in 2020. Those were close, and there is a legitimate argument to be made that Holloway won the second.

This, though, was beyond doubt.

“Max Holloway is an absolute beast,” Volkanovsky said. “That sharpness he has brought in the past few days has brought out the best in me. I needed this.”

Volkanovski is ranked second by pound for pound in the UFC rankings and is the best featherweight by a long margin.

He now has his eye on the lightweight. UFC President Dana White has said he will allow Volkanovsky to fight for the belt if he goes up and it looks like Volkanovsky is signaling in the cage that’s what he’s going to do.

“This division is not enough to keep me occupied,” Volkanovsky said of the featherweight. “I want to step up because I need two sections to keep me occupied.”

It opened a massive sunken wound on Holloway’s left eye early in the fight, which bled profusely. To his credit, he doesn’t seem to bother Holloway.

He fought hard, but was overshadowed by a superior fighter.
