Status: 08/02/2022 00:10 am

As for the US, it is carrying out a “counter-terrorist operation” in Afghanistan. Al-Qaeda leader al-Zawahiri was reportedly killed in a drone strike.

According to the US government, this has dealt a major blow against the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization. “Over the weekend, the United States conducted a counterterrorism operation against a key al Qaeda target in Afghanistan,” a senior Washington administration official said.

“The operation was successful and there were no civilian casualties.” No further details were initially given.

Media: Al Qaeda leader killed

However, Reuters news agency, citing US officials, reported that al-Aqida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in the attack. According to American media such as the news channel CNN and the newspaper “New York Times”, al-Zawahiri was the target of this operation.

Al-Zawahiri was believed to be the successor to Osama bin Laden, who masterminded the September 11, 2001 attacks on four airliners in the United States that killed 3,000 people. In 2011, bin Laden was killed in an attack by US special forces in Pakistan.

Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri is said to have been killed.

The Taliban are talking about attacks on settlements

The radical Islamist Taliban, on the other hand, blames the US drone strike on a residential area in Kabul. A house there was fired upon on Sunday, militant spokesman Sabihullah Mutzahid said. The Taliban condemned the attack as a violation of international principles and the agreement to withdraw US forces from Afghanistan.

The Taliban took over Afghanistan last summer. The US and its allies withdrew from the country after years of military action. The Taliban government is not recognized internationally.
