LONDON: Only a quarter of Russians support Ukraine war

For months there have been some reports that the Russian side has won the war in Ukraine. Regional losses dominate. According to the British Secret Service, approval of “military action” in Russia is declining.
According to British experts, it will be difficult for the Kremlin to justify the war in Ukraine to its own people. This emerges from a daily intelligence update from the Ministry of Defense in London on the war in Ukraine. “Given that Russia is unlikely to achieve any significant battlefield victories in the coming months, it will be difficult to obtain even the tacit approval of the Kremlin’s population,” the report said.
According to the British, leaked data from Russian officials shows that only a quarter of the population in Russia now supports a war of aggression in Ukraine. At the beginning of the war it was still 80 percent. However, the regional mobilization in September made many feel war.
Some 300,000 reservists have been called up to fight in Ukraine on Vladimir Putin’s orders since late September, given the military’s setbacks. Partial mobilization proved to be a highly unpopular move and prompted a mass exodus in Russia and the largest anti-war demonstrations in months. Demonstrations were mostly organized by women.
Since Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine began in late February, the British Ministry of Defense has issued daily updates on the progress of the war, citing intelligence. By doing so, the British government wants to counter the Russian portrayal and keep allies in line. Moscow accuses London of a disinformation campaign targeting London.
