Dolphins vs Bears Points: Toa Tagoviloa beat Justin Fields in a historic match

Miami Dolphins quarterback Toa Tagovailoa and Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields played Sunday’s game as if it were Saturday’s game between Alabama and Ohio State, each putting together numbers one can only imagine in an NCAA Football video game in the Dolphins’ 35-32-day win Sunday in Chicago. Tua Tagovailoa became the first quarterback in Dolphins history with over 300 passing yards, three passing touchdowns and no interceptions in consecutive games thanks to a 302-yard pass and three points on 21 of 30.

Justin Fields went toe-to-toe with Tagovailoa and high-powered passer-hunters Terek Hill and Jaylene Waddell with a performance like never before. Fields became the first player in NFL history with three touchdown passes and 150+ yards in the same game. He also broke the NFL regular season, the quarterback scoring in one game rushing for the yard with 178 on the floor against Miami, 61 of which came in his only score of the day. Fields’ quick landing was the longest of his career. Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick set the previous record with 173 fast yards in Week 13 of the 2002 season against the Minnesota Vikings.

One of the main differences between Tagovailoa’s afternoon and Fields was how the Miami playmakers made some magic of their own because everything the Bears did so offensively stems only from Fields’ unique brilliance. Hill finished with seven receiving yards, receiving 143 yards and receiving three yards, bringing his season’s receiving total to 1,104, the most in a player’s first nine games in a Super Bowl Era. Hill topped Calvin Johnson’s Hall of Famer for 1,083 yards in his first nine games of the 2013 season.

Waddle also showed the quarterback, scoring 85 yards and receiving touchdowns on five grabs. The dynamic duo combined the Dolphins for 1,916 receiving yards this season, the most teammates in nine games in a Super Bowl Era. They broke the previous record of 1,878 yards set by Hall of Famer’s brilliant tandem “The Greatest Show on Turf” Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt.

The Dolphins scored touchdowns in four of their top five offensive possessions with the day’s fifth hit on the Bears’ first kick, which was blocked for a 25-yard hit. Fields had one last chance to lead the Bears into overtime or win with Chicago getting the ball rolling with 2:50 left to play. He was only able to capture one landing first before the sack thwarted their last effort.

The win improves the Dolphins to 6-3 overall, and 6-0 this season when Tagovailoa starts and ends the game. Chicago dropped to 3-6 overall with losses in five of their last six games after starting the season 2-1.
