Former Chief Adviser to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummings accuses the government of lying about its original strategy to fight the epidemic. In early 2020, the Johnson administration planned to achieve herd immunity by spreading the corona virus to the population in early September, he said in a series of tweets over the weekend.
The strategy was changed two weeks before the first lock-in began in March 2020, after the government made it clear from many quarters that the plan would lead to disaster.
Then the government denied this and they deliberately lied. According to Cummings, the government could have avoided the initial lockout of “the right product and the right people”. However, of course, the two locks that came later were “not needed”.
The government has denied the allegations. When asked if the herd immunity was the original plan, Home Secretary Priti Patel told the BBC on Sunday: “Of course not.” Jenny Harris, the current head of the health department and later the government’s deputy chief adviser on medical matters, said: “I can definitely say that I did not attend any government meeting that proposed herd immunity as a control mechanism at this stage of the epidemic.”
Cummings resigned from his Downing Street post in December after a heated debate among close advisers. The former close confidante of the Prime Minister has leveled a number of allegations against Johnson over the past few weeks.
Next Wednesday, he is scheduled to testify before public health and science committees investigating the government’s epidemic. Johnson’s former credibility had already expressed its willingness to provide the committee with detailed information on the head of government’s misconduct. He is available to MPs “as long as they want”. He also recently threatened to release confidential documents during the investigation.
Cummings is considered one of the strategists for Johnson’s Brexit campaign in 2016, but at the same time caused controversy with his confrontational political style. According to media reports, there must have been considerable controversy over the role of the adviser in the cabinet. Critics, however, blame him above all for the Johnson government’s dangerous corona policy.
Cummings drove across England in the middle of the spring lockdown, leaving his isolated spot several times. His car journey could not be satisfactorily explained.
