Announced during the opening of Night Live at Gamescom, it is an “ambitious” survival MMO set in a dune world. Dune: Awakening is the latest game from Conan Exiles developer Funcom, “and is inspired by the Frank Herbert novels and the Academy Award-winning film Denis Villeneuve while exploring exciting new possibilities in the franchise.” The game is set for release on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S.
According to its press release, Dune: Awakening “combines the bravery, creativity of survival games and the social interaction of large-scale persistent multiplayer gaming to create a unique and ambitious open-world survival MMO.” The player will get the chance to “go into the unassigned sectors and be the first to discover secrets and riches before Coriolis storms once again shift the sand and alter the landscape, escape with difficulty from massive sandworms, build your home from a shelter to a mighty base, and traverse the dunes in iconic chariots of Universe “.
When not exploring Arrakis on foot, players can deploy and protect their harvest from rival factions in “fast-paced killer combat that transitions seamlessly from armored ground vehicles to helicopters in the sky.” The press release also mentions a type of in-game rating, which players can rise to through careful planning and impact building.
“Dune: Awakening truly promises to bring the Dunes world to life in an exciting new way,” said Sam Rappaport, Vice President of Interactive Media at Legendary Entertainment. “We are thrilled to create this with a partner like Funcom, who is so adept at capturing the rich detail and wonder of cinematic worlds for a gaming audience.”
