Partial mobilization in Russia, but not all: Kremlin press spokesman Peskov’s son falls for a bogus call from those close to Navalny. He says he’s handling things differently when he hears he’s being drafted into the war effort against Ukraine.
When moderator Dmitri Nizowtsev picks up the phone on a live broadcast, the blood of his interlocutor on the other end of the line must be freezing. Nikolai Peskov, the son of Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, learns from the military commissar that he has been summoned to military service and must appear for a medical examination at 10 a.m. the next day. “If you know I’m Mr. Pesco, you’ll understand how wrong I am to be there. In short, I take it on a different level,” Pesco’s son replies.
The revealing conversation can be seen live on a popular political YouTube channel run by supporters of Kremlin dissident Alexei Navalny. Pesco’s son says he won’t come to the draft office and hasn’t given his consent to the voluntary draft. “I generally need to understand what’s going on and what my rights are. You’re going to kick me out tomorrow—trust me, neither you nor I need that.” As Moderator Nisovtsev insists, young Peskov continues: “I have no problem defending my homeland – but I have to understand the benefit of my appearance there, I’m talking about some political nuances,” he adds.
Pesco Jr. also says he should not be identified as a volunteer in the documents. “I’ll do what I’m told. If Vladimir Vladimirovich tells me to go there, I’ll go,” he said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding, “I’m not a simple man.”
Navalny: Throws Russian citizens into a meat grinder
Imprisoned in a penal camp, Navalny told a court appearance that Putin’s “war on crime” was getting worse. Navalny said Putin wanted to involve as many people as possible in the bloodshed in Ukraine. “To maintain his own power, he divided the neighboring country and killed the people there. Now he is throwing a lot of Russian citizens into the meat grinder,” Navalny said.
The Russian president announced in the morning that Russians of military age would be partially mobilized. About 300,000 reservists are to be sent to bolster Russian and separatist forces in eastern and southern Ukraine, according to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. According to Shoigu, up to 25 million people could be mobilized – this is the total number of reservists in Russia.
