In the wake of the violent riots in Rotterdam, rioters in several cities in the Netherlands on Sunday night caused further unrest. In The Hague, young people in particular have been throwing firecrackers, setting fires and destroying traffic signs. Also, police said one of the rioters threw a stone through the window of an ambulance carrying a patient.
Five police officers were injured during the operation. One person suffered a knee injury and concussion. Also, two police drivers had their hearing impaired and two colleagues suffered hand injuries. They were also treated at the hospital.
At night, police used mobile units and dogs and horses to “restore order.” Seven people were arrested in The Hague.
Riots in other cities as well
Riots also broke out in the central Dutch city of Urg and cities in the southern province of Limburg, according to public broadcaster NOS. The rioters hurled stones at police and firefighters, set off fireworks and set fire to electric scooters. The youth had earlier arranged to meet on social websites.
Dutch Justice Minister Ferd Grapperhaus described the “extreme violence against police officers, riot police and firefighters” as “terrible” and announced harsh action against the rioters.
In Rormand, in the south of the country, near the German border, dozens of young people threw firecrackers at police. There was also a riot from a nearby stone. In the town of Urg, northeast of Amsterdam, youths also threw firecrackers, and many were arrested there.
A protest rally in Amsterdam on Saturday afternoon, however, was largely silent. It was attended by several thousand people. More than 1,000 coroners gathered in the town of Preda near the Belgian border. “People want to live, that’s why we’re here,” said protest organizer Just Eras.
