Gilroy Garlic Festival Shooting: A lesson to implement stricter gun laws?

Every day there are calls for safer gun laws and imposing prohibitions on bigger weapons and parts that modify the weapons into deadlier ones. Despite the continuous dreaded instances of mass shooting, many senators have termed the current gun laws appropriate, requiring no change.

The latest mass shooting incident that occurred at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, Northern California shook the community, including the law authorities to the core. As the festival was nearing its end on the final day, mass shooting took place forcing everyone to seek shelter and safety and those who could not, lost their lives.

As per the medical officials and law enforcement authorities, the shooting took the lives of four leaving behind 15 injured till now. As per Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee, the dead includes the suspect responsible for turning the festivital into a mass funeral, full of despair.

Apart from the six admitted at St. Louise Regional Hospital, five were admitted at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and four were taken to the Regional Medical Center in San Jose. The mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival has sparked increase in demands for gun control over various social media platforms.

Gilroy Police Chief Smithee said that the suspect was taken down within minutes of the shooting. However, it was not before the shooting took a life of a 6-year-old kid, Steven Romero, of San Jose, as confirmed by his family. According to the latest reports, the law authorities including ATF and FBI are still in search of the second suspect.

The chaos at the Gilroy Garlic Festival after the mass shooting saw people hurriedly running, taking cover behind the tents, crawling under tables or climbing fences to escape the gunfire.

Following the shooting, the Gilroy Police PD tweeted, “The hearts of Gilroy PD and entire community go out to the victims of today’s shooting at the Garlic Festival.  The scene is still active. If you are looking for a loved one, please go to the reunification center at Gavilan College at parking lot B.”

They further informed about a witness line and family reunification line that has been established.

Even though the law authorities took down the suspect within minutes of the shooting, how long would it take for us to learn from these fateful events and do something in retrospect to make sure that mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival is the last?
