Opening the gates of award season this year, Golden Globes 2020 was a rainbow at night with strong winds of the entertainment world and social issues. Yes, you read it!
Like a box of pizza with differently-flavoured slices, the awards nights had in store a lot and everything distant for the viewers. However, only few moments were able to make it and become the most memorable.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) focused on addressing the issue of climate change and how animal products impact that at the 77th Golden Globes. The organizers attempted to make the ceremony sustainable, owing to which they were serving an all-vegan menu for dinner. Although considerate, the idea irked some guests and was applauded by some.
Joaquin Phoenix, the Joker actor in his acceptance speech on winning in the best actor in a motion picture drama category, called it a “very bold move”. He said, “I would like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change.”
On similar lines, Brad Pitt also said that he was “all for the vegan thing”, but his reason was less about climate and more about the taste of previous year’s steak that he didn’t like.
The fifth-time host of the Golden Globes, Ricky Gervais sounded a big critic of the idea, where his words put Hollywood next to hypocrisy. “I think it’s a good idea that 800 people are trying to save the planet and arriving all in separate limos to have some veg,” he said in a pre-show interview with “Access Hollywood”.
He also roasted the organizers during the show, saying that the dinner “tonight was all vegetables, as are all of the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press”.
Conservative radio host Mark Simone also pointed out the modes of transportation that the celebrities used to reach for the vegan dinner. “The Golden Globe idiots were actually eating a vegan to dinner to fight climate change, while their 750 gas guzzling limousines were parked outside and over 100 private jets were used to bring people to the ceremony,” he stated.
While the celebrities enjoyed the vegan dinner, there were also some big wins, elegant beauties, moments of love and memorable speeches.
Sam Mendes World War I movie, 1917 triumphed the Best Drama and Best Director titles. Whereas, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood took home the awards for screenplay and best musical or comedy. Besides, Brad Pitt also won the Best Actor in Supporting Role for his character Cliff Booth in the movie.
The celebrities were all glammed-up too. Some of the best dressed female included Helen Mirren twirling in Dior, Saoirse Ronan in Celine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw in Gucci, Jennifer Aniston in Dior, Cate Blanchett in Mary Katrantzou, and others. The best dressed men (Link 2) included: Joe Alwyn in Tom Ford, Karamo Brown in a brushed silk suit, Andrew Scott wearing a classic white dinner jacket, Billy Porter in a lavish white suit with a feather train, and others.
The Golden Globes red carpet also marked the presence of several lovely and totally in love couples, including Joaquin Phoenix and fiancée Rooney Mara, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, Kit Harington and Rose Leslie, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, newly engaged Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost, and many others.
There was a lot in just a single night, yet the people couldn’t help but focus on the voids of the idea that the organizers wanted everyone to notice. It probably won’t be too critical to say that the 77th edition of Golden Globes was pretty fine, but not the best.
