How Kiké Hernández feels about switching to Red Sox shortstop

“Honestly, I think it’s easier on the body to play outfield than to play in midfield,” said Hernandez. “That was one of the things that caught my eye in ’21 when I started going out there every day early in the season. It was like, man, I had so much respect for the outfielders back then just because even running to the dugouts was And back and forth between roles had a negative impact.

“I think I’m more suited to the field because I like to get the game fast and the game is much faster on the field. I like to be involved in the game, and there’s a lot I can do on the field in terms of communicating with my teammates and the way I see the game and things.”

Hernandez doesn’t have many, if any, concerns about moving onto the field. He cited a road game against the Los Angeles Angels last season as the reason for this. In that contest, he was called upon to play shortstop in subsequent innings and played a key role after not playing since spring training.

For Hernandez, being in the shortstop position is really natural.

“For me, it feels like riding a bike,” said Hernandez. “And I mean this in the simplest possible way. I am a competent player who can play abroad. That is the way I put it.”
