Kadyrov critic killed in Chechnya

In 2020, a critic of Kadyrov, the leader of the Chechen Republic, was kidnapped. Moments later, a video appears showing the 19-year-old being tortured. After that there is no trace of him. Now his companions announce: the young man was killed shortly after his abduction.

An opposition activist has been killed in Chechnya, Russian Republic. Salman Debsurgaev was the administrator of the Telegram channel for the “Adat” movement, banned in Russia for criticizing Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov. The movement said in a statement on its website that the young man was abducted two years ago and killed nine days later. According to activists, they had information about Debsurke’s death for a long time, but until the end they believed that it was not real. Debsurkaev was only 19 years old.

The activist was abducted on September 6, 2020 in the Russian city of Kelendzhik on the Black Sea coast and taken to Chechnya. According to media reports, relatives were able to find the kidnapped man’s smartphone – so it was at a police station in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya. A day later, a video of the torture surfaced on the Internet. It shows how the 19-year-old was forced to sit naked in a glass bottle.

The investigation into the abduction of the young activist was launched only in Gelendzhik in November 2020. At this stage, the 19-year-old is already said to be dead.

“Bomb blasted in mouth”

According to his comrades, Debsurkaev was killed on September 15, 2020 at a military training area in the village of Tishalka near Grozny. “Salman was tied up, a grenade was placed in his mouth and detonated from a distance,” the movement said in a statement. After that, Thepsurge’s remains were handed over to his relatives – with a request to “bury him like a dog.” According to the movement, the activist was buried in an unmarked grave.

“Adat” is one of the largest and most important resistance movements in Chechnya. On the “1ADAT” Telegram channel managed by Debsurgave, he reported to more than 40,000 subscribers about human rights violations and other matters in the republic.

Ramzan Kadyrov is a close confidant of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has been ruling Grozny with an iron fist since 2007. In the republic, critics of the government are repeatedly kidnapped and extrajudicially killed.
