As Matt Rowley began his transition from NFL coach to the rebuilding ranks of the college football program, some potential elements of Rowley’s opening Nebraska team came into focus.
Rhule was officially announced as Nebraska’s head coach Saturday morning, after Huskers officials — led by athletics director and former football star Trev Alberts — came close to a deal with Rhule, saw some elements causing a delay and then turned around again to shore up Rhule with a stint. Long – the term of the contract.
The Athletic’s Joe Person reports that both Carolina Panthers assistant defensive line coach Terrance Knighton and assistant strength coach Corey Campbell have immediately left Charlotte’s NFL franchise to join Rhule’s Cornhuskers.
It’s also been reported that longtime Rhule collaborator Evan Cooper will be joining the staff as well. Cooper worked at personnel as well as with defensive backs on multiple stops with Rhule.
Where else could Rhule turn for some major additions to the Nebraska staff?
Aside from having a large-scale movement for Nebraska to retain favorite son Mickey Joseph, who are some of the other prospects for the Cornhuskers’ Group A under Reol?
Since Rhule was named head of Nebraska’s program, multiple sources have told FootballScoop that a pair of top scorers have emerged for the Cornhuskers’ offensive team.
Marcus Satterfield, current offensive coordinator for the Shane Beamer South Carolina Gamecocks, is as close to Rhule as anyone, and is seen as an addition Rhule will greatly appreciate.
Rhule’s longtime assistant, Satterfield, worked alongside Rhule at Temple and Baylor and with the NFL’s Panthers before Satterfield agreed to become the first-ever Beamer coordinator in South Carolina.
Multiple sources told FootballScoop that Satterfield has agreed to an initial two-year term to lead the Gamecocks offense and that Satterfield’s agreement will expire at the end of the year.
Also, Jake Peetz—currently an offensive assistant with the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams—has a history with Rhule and Nebraska.
Betz is a Nebraska native who played high school ball in the state and also graduated from Nebraska. He worked with Rhule at Carolina before Ed Orgeron hired Peetz to manage the LSU offense in Orgeron’s final season, 2021, at LSU.
