Missing Belarusian activist Shishev dies

EBelarusian activist recently announced his disappearance in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. Kiev police say Vitaly Shisho was found hanging in a park near his home on Tuesday. Shishcho was the head of the organization “Belarusian House in Ukraine”, which helps to deport Belarusians. The organization announced Monday that Shisho has not returned from jogging. According to media reports, he had previously complained of harassment.

Police say they are investigating the murder. Personal items and his mobile phone were found near Shishou’s body. According to the “Belarusian House”, Shishev fled to Ukraine last year, fearing dictatorial authorities in his country after participating in demonstrations critical of the government.

Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko has arrested a popular opposition member and his girlfriend after a fighter jet intercepted a passenger plane and forced it to land while flying over Belarus. So the western states have imposed sanctions against the government in Minsk.

Many Belarusians are fleeing the repression of the state apparatus abroad. In the last few days, the case of Belarusian Olympian Kristina Dimonovskaya has caused a stir internationally. Dimonovskaya was abducted from Tokyo after criticizing sports officials in his home country. The 24-year-old is now in the custody of Japanese police and is expected to return to Poland soon.
