Following the Monmouth poll conducted across the country, former Vice-President Joe Biden has plunged down by 13 points and is now at a tie with Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
The three 2020 Democratic hopefuls Biden, Sanders and Warren are standing at 19 percent, 20 percent and 20 percent of support respectively.
Soon after the verdict of the polls, various Democrats claimed that the polls show how Biden cannot win the 2020 elections solely by showing how he is the best choice against Donald Trump, but he needs to provide others reasons too so as to garner more votes.
The Monmouth poll witnessed Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren gaining 6 and 5 points respectively. On the other hand, Biden saw a significant drop of 13 points in his support. California Sen. Kamala Harris is at 8 percent, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker at 4 percent and the Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, Pete Buttigieg at 4 percent.
Democratic strategist Michael Trujillo said, “It’s a slippery slip ’n slide if the one argument he’s basing his candidacy on falls apart. Is this the beginning of the house of cards coming apart? Maybe, this is exactly where the Biden campaign does not want to be.”
Earlier, a poll showed Biden topping his Democratic rivals with 29 percent of supporters and with his statement on electability, it seemed plausible that he might experience a drop in the supporters.
Another Democratic strategist Jim Manley said, “I hope the Biden folks are smart enough to realize that they can’t run solely on the electability argument because I’m pretty confident that won’t work out in the long run.”
“Everyone is going to throw a lot more punches from here on out, and it won’t be easy for Biden to run on electability alone. It’s going to get a lot harder,” he added.
After the results of the Monmouth poll were released, some of Biden’s supporter pointed out towards number of people that took part in survey – 298 people. While others said, “The poll is a stretch. Every other poll has us in the lead by a long shot.”
But, it seems like Biden has nothing to be worried about, since he has already qualified for the third Democratic debate despite the drop in supporters.
