Usually shown in blue, Neptune is attributed to methane in the atmosphere, but images from an infrared webcam show the planet much whiter in colour. The new image shows fine streaks of beautiful light around Neptune, which NASA says are high-altitude methane ice clouds that reflect sunlight.
One of Neptune’s moons, Triton, can also be seen in the image. But because of the diffraction heights in the image, one can easily mistake it for a distant star. NASA said Triton’s surface is covered in frozen, condensed nitrogen, which, on average, reflects 70% of the sun’s rays.
The image of the rings is the most fragile since 1989, when NASA Voyager 2 It became the first spacecraft to navigate Neptune, which lies about 2.8 billion miles from Earth – more than 30 times the distance from Earth to the Sun.
