Opec Decision and Ukraine War: US Senator Wants to Punish Saudi Arabia

The Opec decision and the war in Ukraine
US Senator Wants to Punish Saudi Arabia

Washington’s relationship with Saudi Arabia is strained. Senator Menendez is furious that the kingdom is siding with Russia in the Ukraine war by cutting OPEC oil production. He proposes freezing US ties to Riyadh.

After the Saudi-led OPEC+ cartel cut oil production, the chairman of the US State Department has called on a key Middle East ally to “freeze” US cooperation. “The United States must immediately freeze all aspects of our cooperation with Saudi Arabia, including all arms sales and defense cooperation, which are absolutely necessary to protect American personnel and interests,” said Democratic Senator Robert Menendez. He said he would not offer to cooperate with the government in Riyadh until the kingdom reconsidered its stance on the war in Ukraine. “Enough is enough.”

Menendez said he was appalled by attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. “You either support the free world trying to prevent a war criminal from violently destroying an entire country, or you support him,” Menendez said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Saudi Arabia chose the latter “in a terrible decision driven by economic self-interest”. The Saudi embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Despite concerns about a global recession fueled by high energy prices, the Opec+ oil cartel agreed to cut oil production by two percent of global supply. US wants to lower oil prices to make Russia lose oil revenue due to war against Ukraine. The West accuses Russia of using energy as a weapon and creating an energy crisis in Europe. Relations between the UK and US President Joe Biden’s US administration are strained.
