January 21, Monday, will be observed as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, popularly known as MLK Day. The day commemorates the birthday of Martin Luther King, who was a nonviolent activist and the leader of the Civil Rights Movement that protested racial prejudice. His birthday was observed as a federal holiday after he was assassinated in 1968.

Washington DC

Washinton DC will celebrate the 38th annual event at 11 am EST, right at where the Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE and Good Hope Road SE meet. Check-in for the parade will open at 10 am at the Anacostia Arts Center.

The organizers informed, “The parade will step off at 12 pm and proceed south on Martin Luther King Jr Ave SE through downtown Anacostia. It will conclude at the campus of St. Elizabeth’s East with a Health and Community Fair at the Gateway Pavilion located at 2700 Martin Luther King Jr Ave SE.”

Houston, Texas

Known as the Houston Grande parade, this year, the city will celebrate its silver jubilee anniversary. Check-in for the parade will start at 8 in the morning next to Houston Community College Central Campus. The parade will begin at 10 am from the San Jacinto Street and Elgin Street crossing, and end in San Jacinto and Webster Street after 2 hours. More than 300,000 people are likely to attend the event.

Phoenix, Arizona

The gathering for the parade in Phoenix will begin at 8:30 am near the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. It will take off at 9 am, and terminate at Margaret T Hance Park. There is a MLK day festival happening near the park with stalls for lip-smacking food, and displays of art & entertainment.

San Diego, California

San Diego will observe its 39th parade, organized by the Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. The group holds a special honor as Martin Luther King Jr was once its member. Established in 1906, the fraternity is the oldest African-American group in the US. The parade will begin at 2 pm in Harbor Drive and end at Embarcadero after 3 hours.
