As Hurricane Dorian continues to move towards the eastern coast of the US, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam has declared emergency in the state. Post the announcement, made on Monday afternoon, the Governor has also permitted the Commonwealth to gather amenities and supplies for the southeastern part of the state.
During the announcement, Northam said, “Hurricane Dorian is a serious storm, and current predictions indicate that it may affect parts of Virginia. I am declaring a state of emergency to ensure that localities and communities have the appropriate level of assistance, and to coordinate the Commonwealth’s response to any potential impacts from Hurricane Dorian.”
“I encourage Virginians to take all necessary precautions to make sure they are prepared as well,” he added.
The announcement made by Ralph Northam not only allows Commonwealth to gather amenities and supplies but also to plan the evacuation with the neighboring state, North Carolina.
Earlier, Dorian, after converting into an alarming Category 4 storm, caused massive flooding in Bahamas on Monday. The extent of destruction was of the level that the authorities had to ask people to ensure the availability of floating devices.
The release made by the Governor also stated that the storm might cause flooding in the coastal and in-land region of the state; there might also be an increase in the intensity of the storm and wind along with longer power outages in the state.
Ralph Northam also said that various agencies like the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Virginia State Police, Virginia Department of Transportation, Virginia National Guard, Virginia Department of Social Services, Virginia Department of Health, Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services are working together to prepare against the storm.
The press release also notified the residents of the state of monitoring the storm, evacuation and the resources that might be needed at any time prior to, post or during the storm.
Although many meteorologists believe that Hurricane Dorian will not reach the shore of the United States, meteorologist Daniel Brown alerted that “only a small deviation” can easily bring the core of the dangerous storm towards the US. The National Hurricane Center has also increased the observations regarding the Category 4 storm across the coasts of Florida and Georgia.
