When Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings was laid down at the National Statuary Hall, it was an emotional sight as hundreds of lawmakers from both parties came together to honor him. The 68-year-old Democrat, who rose from dust in the Democratic Party, went on to become a key figure in the impeachment investigation of President Trump.

Rep. Cummings, who also served as the chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, has become the first African-American lawmaker to be laid down in the state’s Capitol. The scene became much more emotional when the 68-year-old was carried out in a flag-draped coffin by members of the honor guard.

Furthermore, the impact of Rep. Elijah Cummings in the life of Congressmen and Congress itself can be determined that two of the former US Presidents are scheduled to deliver remarks at his funeral service, which will be held in Baltimore.

Amongst many of the statements delivered by Cummings, which describe his dedication are:

  • You can either control your destiny or let life control you.
  • This job here – I love this job because I can help masses of people at one time.
  • The work I do is consistent with what I believe my purpose is on earth.

Amongst many other roles, Elijah Cummings was also a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and served as the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. Additionally, he was widely acclaimed for congressional panel hearings on Steroids in 2008.

He also introduced and supported various policies and bills to bring a change in the current scenario of American politics. Some of the bills he introduced were Presidential and Federal Records Act Amendments of 2014, All Circuit Review Extension Act, and Smart Savings Act.

As the Democratic Rep. rested at the National Statuary Hall of Capitol on Thursday, Republican Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina furnished a heartfelt and emotional eulogy.

While delivering the eulogy at the service of Elijah Cummings, Meadows said, “He’s called a number of things — a father, a husband, friend, chairman. For me, I was privileged enough to be able to call him a dear friend. Some have classified it as an unexpected friendship, but for those of us that know Elijah. It’s not unexpected or surprising.”

Aside from Meadows, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also came forward to pay tribute to the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, saying, “His voice could shake mountains, stir the most cynical hearts, inspiring us all to be better. Elijah Cummings never forgot where he came from and never lost sight of where he wanted his country to go.”

Even though the country has seen many great leaders like Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, Barack Obama, the presence of Elijah Cummings will always be felt and his efforts to improve the political scenario of the country will always be remembered.
