Marie Fredriksson, lead singer of Roxette, who ruled over hearts and also the American billboard charts in 1980’s and 90’s, has died at 61. The news was confirmed by her management company.
Though the cause of her death was not declared, but her management affirmed in a statement that Fredriksson had struggled with cancer, after knowing that she had a brain tumor in 2002.
Fredriksson and the singer-songwriter Per Gessle formed Roxette in 1986, after having more than moderate success in Sweden. The duo reportedly came together so they could achieve international stardom. They, however, broke in the United States in 1989.
Interestingly, in 1991, Roxette after getting recognition as a superstar band, also got its own stamp in 1991, issued by the Swedish postal service.
The Swedish who sang in English, rose to fame with her breakout single “The Look,” reaching at the top on the US Billboard Hot chart in 1989. Her success multiplied in the following years, with singles, “Listen to Your Heart” and “Joyride” also topping the charts. Another single, “It Must Have Been Love,” became a super hit to feature in the 1990 comedy film “Pretty Woman,” starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts.
“Marie leaves us a grand musical legacy. Her amazing voice — both strong and sensitive — and her magical live performances will be remembered by all of us who was lucky enough to witness them,” Dimberg Jernberg Management said in a statement.
Despite Marie Fredriksson having being diagnosed with cancer, Roxette performed again, and released more albums in 2009. But in 2016, the doctors advised her to stop touring and give more importance to her health.
Marie Fredriksson was born on May 30, 1958, in Skane County. The star who was born in a poor family, had passion for singing from a very tender age. As reported, she often woke her parents in the morning by singing early morning opera into her mirror.
“But we also remember a wonderful person with a huge appetite for life, and woman with a very big heart who cared for everybody she met.” Former bandmate Gessle released a statement remembering Marie Fredriksson as an “outstanding musician, a master of the voice, an amazing performer.”
Meanwhile fans also paid tribute to the great singer, with a Twitter user named Kirstie Louise Carr writing: “Floored to hear about the death of the beautiful #mariefrederiksson The Look is my song I rock out to like a loon in the car: Walking like a man, hitting like a hammer, she’s a juvenile scam, never was a quitter, tasty like a raindrop, she’s got the look” ❤️#RIPMarie #Roxette
Another fan named Ms. Snoozybaubles also expressed grief and said, she was very sad to hear the news of Marie Frederiksson’s death. And that her beautiful voice will always be remembered.
