Security Council offers broad side: Russia backs down from UN resolution

Russia backs down from UN resolution

Apparently, the Kremlin can not even count China on its side: many states are calling for a draft of Russia’s UN resolution condemning Ukraine for its alleged biological weapons bullshit. Now Russia is abstaining from voting.

Russia has withdrawn from a planned vote on a resolution on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine due to a lack of support in the UN Security Council. Diplomatic sources in New York say Russia has not been able to find supporters for its draft resolution. This suggests that even China would not have voted for this text. Russia wanted to bring the resolution to a vote on Friday after it was repeatedly postponed.

Instead, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzia announced on Friday morning that the most powerful UN body in the East (probably 3 pm CET) would meet again for an emergency meeting on US laboratories allegedly producing biological weapons in Ukraine. The council has already dealt with the issue at the request of Moscow. The allegations are widely described as misinformation and unsubstantiated propaganda.

Barbara Woodward, the British ambassador to the UN, told a council meeting in early March that Russia had demanded the so-called “biological weapons” meeting only to give voice to “persistent, completely unsubstantiated and irresponsible conspiracy theories.”

The Kremlin says it is ‘absolute nonsense’

“I put it diplomatically: they are complete nonsense,” Woodward said of the Russian allegations. “There is not the slightest credible indication that there is a biological weapons program in Ukraine.”

US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield made a similar point. Russia has demanded that the Security Council convene in New York “for the sole purpose of spreading false and misleading information.” Russia wants to use chemical weapons “under false flags” in Ukraine. “It is disgraceful for Russia to falsely accuse other countries of the same violations.”
