Taylor Swift, who has been pretty vocal about her support towards the LGBTQ community, recently opened up about the reason behind her advocacy for the group.

In an interview with the fashion magazine Vogue, Swift said she felt compelled to publicly voice for the LGBTQ causes because “rights are being stripped from basically everyone who isn’t a straight white cisgender male.”

“I didn’t realize until recently that I could advocate for a community that I’m not a part of,” the singer added.

During the 2016 presidential elections, Swift faced criticism for staying mum about political issues. It was only in October last year that she voiced about the midterm elections scheduled in November. She accepted the fact that she was “reluctant to publicly voice” her political opinions in the past, but urged her fans and all Americans to vote.

Taylor Swift, who is followed by more than 120 million people on Instagram, brought in some of the most prominent queer celebrities together in her latest music video – You Need to Calm Down. The star studded cast included Katy Perry, Ellen DeGeneres, Laverne Cox, Karamo Brown, Antoni Porowski, Jonathan van Ness, Bobby Berk and Tan France, Ciara, RuPaul, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and his husband Justin Mikita, Billy Porter, Adam Lambert, Adam Rippon, Ryan Reynolds, Hayley Kiyoko, Todrick Hall, Chester Lockhart, Dexter Mayfield, and Hannah Hart.

In the end of the video, fans were urged to sign a petition in support of the Equality Act that would protect LGBTQ people from discrimination at their work places, homes, schools and other public accommodations.

Talking about her recent transition of becoming a LGBTQ ally, Taylor Swift described a conversation she had with friend and singer Todrick Hall, which made her release she wasn’t doing enough for the community.

“Maybe a year or two ago, Todrick and I are in the car, and he asked me, ‘What would you do if your son was gay?’” she said.

“The fact that he had to ask me … shocked me and made me realize that I had not made my position clear enough or loud enough.”

“If he was thinking that, I can’t imagine what my fans in the LGBTQ community might be thinking. It was kind of devastating to realize that I hadn’t been publicly clear about that,” she added.

Taylor Swift’s new album – Lover – would be out soon on August 23. The album includes a song The Man, which according to the singer is what her life would have been if she were a man.
