Miami – A league source confirmed on Monday that the Dolphins offensive team, led by coach Mike McDaniel, continues to work together, as the team will appoint Frank Smith as offensive coordinator.
Smith will work alongside McDaniel, who will call the plays, and wide receivers coach Wes Welker, who will help develop Miami’s game plan. He is the fourth new employee to McDaniel’s offensive team, joining Welker, head coach John Embry and offensive line coach Matt Applebaum.
The NFL Network was the first to report the news of Smith’s appointment.
Smith, 40, joins the McDaniel staff after one season as the Los Angeles Chargers’ running game coordinator and offensive line coach. Under Smith’s leadership, the Charger ranked 11th in pass block win rate in 2021, and 20th in running block win rate — an improvement from 19 and 32 in 2020, respectively.
He captured the Dolphins’ attack ranked 25th in the NFL in yards per game last season, including 17 in passing yards and 30 in rushing. Miami’s offensive line also ranked last in pass block win rate, but it fared better than the block blocker, ranking ninth in block win rate.
Prior to his tenure at Los Angeles, Smith served as the Raiders coach from 2018-2020, Bears head coach from 2015-2017 and assistant offensive line coach for the Saints from 2010-2014.
