In the end, only China agreed with Russia – the UN Security Council failed to draft a resolution on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine. Western nations have previously described the text as “cynical” and “offensive.”
As expected, Russia failed with its own humanitarian resolution in the Ukraine conflict in the Security Council. Moscow did not receive the required nine-thirds vote on its proposed resolution from the 15-member UN body. Only China voted in favor of the text with Russia in the most powerful council of the United Nations, while the remaining 13 countries did not vote.
Because Russia was the occupier in the conflict, Western nations in particular described the country’s humanitarian resolution as “despicable” or “insulting.” This document makes no mention of Russia’s role in the conflict.
UN calls on Ukraine to vote on resolution
The United Nations General Assembly is set to vote on a resolution on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine. Due to the large number of speakers, delegates from all over the country attended the largest UN conference in New York. The election was a speech clearly directed against Russia, which was introduced by Ukraine and is believed to be accepted by a majority of Western diplomats.
But there is a very neutral textual proposal from South Africa that does not refer to Moscow as an occupier that could get votes in the first draft.
