USA vs England lineup: Predicted starting lineup for the USMNT

How will the USA line up against England on Friday in their massive Group B match at the World Cup?

Greg Berhalter has to make some important decisions, most notably whether he can get both Brendan Aronson and Gio Reina into the starting lineup without upsetting the balance of his squad.

Also, he can now rest the players knowing that beating Iran in their final Group B match guarantees a place in the last 16, will give him a lot of headaches and may force him to change plan at the last minute.

It also depends a lot on the approach of the USMNT, they can sit back and look forward to facing England or they may just go all out with high pressure which worked well in the first half against Wales. Whatever they line up, the USMNT will want as much control throughout the game as they are He fizzled out badly in their draw with Wales.

Here is the predicted USMNT lineup against England.

Analysis, options and tactics

First, there are two options here: 1) You play your strongest squad to try and beat England. 2) You know that beating Iran in the last group match definitely gets you into the last 16, so you can rest three key players (Dest, Reem and McKennie) who have yellow cards. The two options are shown above.

The back four and the goalkeeper pick themselves up though after a costly mistake against Wales, maybe Locker Zimmermann can come off and Cameron Carter-Vickers can start? Berhalter could also go with a defense five to stop the England winger, especially if the Three Lions plan to go back to a defense three. Also, Sergino Dest should start at right-back, but he has looked quite rusty after his recent injury and Berhalter may worry Raheem Sterling will attack him on the counter.

In midfield, there is one big decision to be made: will the trio of Moses, Adams and McKinney start again? Adams would certainly do that, but if Berhalter wanted a more attacking lineup, he would probably leave one Moses or McKinney out. I would probably leave Musa because he struggled a little bit against Wales but McKinney could easily be left out because he struggled too and is obviously struggling his way back to full fitness.

If Berhalter goes with a more attacking midfield, one of Aronson and Reyna will start in the 10th. I would probably go with Reina due to his ability to keep the ball, which will be key against England. Obviously, the young Dortmund player was not happy not to play against Wales as he told reporters he was 100 percent fit but Berhalter wanted to use Jordan Morris on the bench in front of him. It was very likely that Berhalter was saving Reina from any possible injury because Wells was so physical. Aaronson could easily start wide in this game but I expect him to make a really good impact in the second half.

Up top I’ll bring in Haji Wright for Josh Sargent. He would give the USMNT a pivotal point at the top, and although Josh Sargent did well on the USA goal against Wales, the ball didn’t really stick to him. Wright will allow the USA to get further up the field and take some of the pressure off as England is expected to have a lot of the ball and the USA will play in a 4-5-1 formation for most of this match.
