They dreamed of a big deal – now disgusting animal traders face fat prison sentences!
A total of five people have been arrested in connection with the LTTE’s illegal trade in Vietnam. Two of them, a 48-year-old man and his wife, were caught red-handed while trying to cut down a 300-pound tiger.
According to officials in the Southeast Asian country, the couple wanted to separate the animal and make bone paste. Local police chief Lu Wan Hui said Monday: “After a tip, we investigated and found what we were looking for.”
Scary: Apparently both had training. During a search of the home, officers found five kilograms of tiger bones, six claws and ten kilograms of frozen bone paste.
The brown substance obtained by boiling the tiger’s skeleton is said to cure various ailments and is popular in traditional Vietnamese and Chinese medicine. One kilogram of pure tiger bone paste sells for up to US $ 5,000 on the black market.
The couple agreed to buy a dead tiger from a man in the neighboring Nghe An province for 130 million dong (approximately, 5,200). Police identified the vendor and arrested him and two other suspects. Prisoners face up to five years in prison.
Vietnamese police have uncovered several cases in recent years, including illegal breeding, abduction and killing of tigers. Predators are listed as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
