On the Ellen DeGeneres daytime talk show, Sykes, a third of the trio who hosted the Academy Awards Sunday, said that while she didn’t witness Will Smith slapping presenter Chris Rock because she was changing her clothes, she did witness a saucy verbal exchange of Smith with Rock. And the moments that follow.
“For them to let him stay in that room and enjoy the rest of the show and accept his award, I was like, ‘How gross is this?'” she said. This is just the wrong message.” “You assault someone, you are escorted out of the building and that’s it. For them to let him continue, I thought it was disgusting. Plus, I wanted to be able to run after his win and say, ‘Unfortunately I can’t be here tonight…’
Sykes says she is upset by the fact that “nobody” has apologized to her and fellow hosts Amy Schumer and Regina Hall.
“We worked really hard to put this show together,” she said, just so that it was withheld.
Sykes said she interacted with Rock at an after party and he apologized to her, saying, “It was supposed to be your night,” according to Sykes.
“This is Chris,” she said.
“I love my friend @chrisrock and think he handled it like a pro,” she wrote. “I stayed there and Oscar introduced his friend questlove and the whole thing was so annoying.”
Rock was presenting the award for Best Documentary when Smith rushed onto stage and hit him in the face over a joke Rock made about Smith’s wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith.
